Simple prosaic delights

The White Rabbit

Over the weekend I realized, I’m in the rat race. How did that happen? When did I enter? Why would one choose to enter a rat race? I, for one, am not a rat, furthermore the only racing I may find appealing is perhaps rally car, but for heavens sake not every day! Where is the fun in that? All novelty and thrill would be lost.

Remember the White Rabbit in “Alice’s adventures in Wonderland“? He was such a sad stressed out little fellow. The only thing he could focus on was the race against time.

I call for a stop to this nonsense! We all need to slow down! My goodness, what are we racing toward? How many particulars are missed? Not only at work but more importantly in life. The life one lives. I don’t want to end up like that poor white rabbit.

Let us start the week out by taking time in the morning to breath, enjoy your tea or coffee. Really savor the time during that one cup. Surely we can make time for one cup, make time for ourselves.

Instead of getting caught up in the negativity and ugliness of the daily commute to work, take mental snap shots of beautiful scenes. As Johnny Mercer‘s 1945 hit sings one must, “Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive.

Whether one has a half hour or a whole to take for lunch that time is yours. It may be the only time during the work day that one may claim. So, claim it!

Refresh both body and mind by eating at a civilized pace, preferably away from your desk, and If time permits, take a walk. The picture with the bee was taken on such a walk.

Another way to take some time, is to plan a leisurely dinner. If you are single, invite a friend or two over. If you have a family, get them involved. Take the pressure off, and make it effortless. A pot luck, your favorite take away, or pizza.

Set the table with your best dishwasher safe plates and glasses. Use a bright table cloth or a beautiful, happy coloured fabric. Buy yourself at least one flower or splurge and buy a bouquet, It does not mater what type of flowers you bring home. All flowers are lovely, whether they are wild flowers or carnations. Who cares!

While at dinner have everyone power down the phones, turn off the television and connect with each other. (The first person to brake gets to wash up the dishes) I suggest we all try to do this at least once a week. Perhaps, you could play music, at an appropriate volume, chosen by a different member of the “get together” each time. The idea is to spend time with people in the same room having a conversation face to face. After all, live is the best way to see some one smile.

I propose we rebel against the race, take back the rains, slow down and enjoy each day. I propose we enjoy our lives. Find at least three things in your day that will make you pause, smile and breath.

Slow life down to enjoy the simple , really not so, prosaic delights.
